What Can You Learn From Disney Moms?

Last Updated on January 22, 2024 by Lori Pace

Moms are the reason that we’re all here today. These are our top picks for Disney moms. Mothers have a profound impact on the lives of Disney heroines and heroes, whether they are living or dead. Many of them are dead by the time the movie begins.

We have many mothers to admire and see in action when it comes to motherhood. These animated mothers, whether they are human or not, can all teach us something about being a good parent. We can all learn from their example.

List of Disney Moms

CHICHA in The Emperor’s New Groove

Chicha has relatively few personal problems, unlike other mothers. She has not been made into a bear, a teapot, or her husband or child abducted. She is a normal mother, who cooks, cleans and raises her two boisterous kids (and a third).

We are immediately drawn to Chicha’s caring, spunky personality and devotion to her family from the moment she is introduced. She is the emotional anchor in the household and shows genuine love for her husband. Cuzco is a man she shows grace towards, even though it’s clear to her that he wants to destroy their home.

HELEN PARR in The Incredibles as One of Disney Moms

It’s not her superhuman abilities that make Mrs. Incredible’s wife a great mom. Her willingness to give up a life of crime fighting (either through government compulsion) in order to fully commit to raising three super-powered kids.

As Mr. His wife, who also struggled with his dream of a secure, comfortable home life, is no different. She doesn’t let her fame overshadow the family’s welfare. She is tireless in her efforts to keep peace in her conflicting household and manage her husband’s ego. Helen works hard to protect her family and is there to help them when they are in danger.

KALA in Tarzan

Kala, who had lost her baby, opens her heart and soul to another species of child. After saving her son’s life, Kala decides to be his adoptive mom in a brave act of compassion.

Kala brought home Tarzan, her baby, without hesitation, to be with her family. This despite the fact that her tribe is skeptical, especially Kerchak, her alpha male mate, who fear outsiders. She sings Mrs. Jumbo’s “Baby Mine”, which is second only to Kala’s best “mom song” in Disney.

LAUREL LIGHTFOOT in Onward

Laurel Lightfoot is a Disney mom who will do anything for her children. She is driven by an unrelenting pursuit for her children’s wellbeing and leaves her home. Laurel faces brutal dangers such as a gang of pixies, a concrete dragon and other pixies. She is unafraid to risk her safety, even when it’s at risk. It’s all about her boys.

MRS. JUMBO in Dumbo as One of Disney Moms

Mrs. Jumbo is the Disney character that embodies pure maternal instinct like no other. She is the O.G. – Deeply caring for her large-eared son, she doesn’t care about his appearance, even when others make fun of him.

He is her advocate, and she will not be intimidated by intolerance. She will sacrifice her social standing and well-being for him. She reacts defensively to bullies who are targeting her son. Although it might not be the wisest response, it is clear that she is a big animal with a big heart.

MRS. POTTS in the Beauty and the Beast

Imagine how hard it would be to raise children in a normal life. Even though she was forced to become limbless kitchenware, Mrs. Potts still displays a loving, patient attitude towards her son. She doesn’t let her undeserved curse hinder her parenting or the fact that she is a single parent.

PERDITA in 101 Dalmatians

Imagine yourself as a mother to 15 children and then having your young ones kidnapped and skinned by evil villains. After you rescue your children, you can adopt so many more that you are a mother to 101. It’s quite an undertaking!

Perdita is the main character of the story in many ways. Her journey expands her understanding beyond the well-being and birth of her children.

QUEEN ELINOR in Brave – Disney Moms

Although she is not the mother of the year, Queen Elinor does have loving intentions and tries to help her daughter live a happy life. Her stubborn traditionalism and inability to listen to other perspectives makes her clash with Merida, who is equally strong-willed.

Queen Elinor’s ability to look at her beliefs and make changes is what earns her a spot on this list. To grow in compassion and grace, she must be humble and  brave. She reminds us to love our children, but not all the answers.

SARAH HAWKINS in Treasure Planet

We don’t get to see Jim Hawkins’ mom much in the movie. But her dedication to raising Jim, who is, frankly, a handful, and running the family’s business makes her a great mother. Sarah is a working mother who runs The Benbow Inn without her husband.

She also has to keep Jim on track when he is in trouble with the law. She allows Jim to embark on a treasure-hunting adventure across the galaxy after the Inn is destroyed. This requires courage and trust. She is admirable for her loving, yet firm approach to childrearing and her concern about her son’s future.
