SNAP (or food stamps) in RI – Rhode Island, is available to eligible singles, couples, children, and families working but still struggling to provide food for their families. What Is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, offers food benefits, access, and education in food preparation and nutrition for low-income households. The benefits, which are a type of ATM card and electronic card, can be used to purchase eligible food at authorized retail food shops.
SNAP is the largest domestic hunger safety net program. Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), a state agency that works with nutrition educators and neighborhood and faith-based groups, ensure that all those who are eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed choices about how to apply and have access to benefits.
Eligibility Requirements For Food Stamps In RI
To be eligible for SNAP assistance in Rhode Island, you must meet these eligibility requirements:
- Rhode Island Legal Resident
- US Citizen, or a lawful permanent residence
- Show proof of identity
- Meet certain income guidelines
- You have less than $2,250 of resources
SNAP benefits are available for as long as they need. This is the case for most people. However, the law does limit benefits to able-bodied SNAP beneficiaries ages 18-49 with no dependents, to 3 months over a 36-month period.

Application For SNAP In Rhode Island
You can submit an online application to apply for SNAP. Or, contact your local DHS Office. A “DHS-2 Application” will be required. You must provide proof of your identity, income, assets/resources, and expenses.
After confirming your eligibility, you can access your SNAP benefits within 30 days of the date that the office received them. You may be eligible for expedited services if you live in a time zone that is seven days or less.
The new Food Access Pilot Program allows eligible elderly, disabled, and homeless SNAP members to use their EBT cards for meals at participating restaurants.
