Kentucky SNAP

Last Updated on October 5, 2023 by Lori Pace

Kentucky SNAP provides cash assistance for low-income families and individuals in Kentucky to purchase healthy food at participating stores. Eligible households receive an EBT card that can be used to purchase food at any of the authorized retail locations in the country. There are also 4,200 locations in Kentucky.

Except where exempted, most recipients between 16 and 59 who aren’t disabled or caring for a child younger than 6 years old must register for, search for, and accept work. ABAWDs that aren’t exempted must follow special work rules, or they will be subjected to a three-month time limit on SNAP receipt.

What Is SNAP?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, offers food benefits, access, and education in food preparation and nutrition for low-income households. The benefits, which are a type of ATM card and electronic card, can be used to purchase eligible food at authorized retail food shops.

SNAP is the largest domestic hunger safety net program. Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), a state agency that works with nutrition educators and neighborhood and faith-based groups, ensure that all those who are eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed choices about how to apply and have access to benefits.
