Bookkeeper jobs for single mothers

Keep a business’s books in order: invoices, bills, bank reconciliations and the reports owners rely on.

What the job is

Bookkeepers record a business’s money coming in and going out: entering invoices and bills, matching bank and card statements, chasing late payments and preparing the reports the owner or accountant uses. In a small business one bookkeeper may handle everything. In a larger one the work is often split into accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Training and certification

BLS lists some college, no degree, as the typical entry route. Most bookkeepers learn on the job, working alongside an experienced clerk, and may get formal training on accounting software. Certification is not usually required, though some bookkeepers earn one to show their skills. The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers’ Certified Bookkeeper credential, for example, needs a four-part national exam and at least two years of full-time bookkeeping experience, or 3,000 hours of part-time or freelance work.
