Under the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, every employer with at least one employee in Colorado must show the pay or a pay range, a general description of benefits and how to apply in each job posting. Since January 1, 2024 postings must also give the date the application window is expected to close.

Under the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, every employer must give at least 1 hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 48 hours a year. You can use it to care for your child, including when the school or child care is closed.

Help with child care

The Colorado Child Care Assistance Program is run by the Department of Early Childhood with each county’s human or social services department. Counties must help families with income at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty guideline. You can apply online, by mail or through your county. Some counties have a waiting list or have paused new enrollment.

Universal Preschool Colorado offers up to 15 free hours a week of preschool in the year before kindergarten, with more hours for some families depending on funding.

Tax credits

The Colorado earned income credit is refundable. It was 50 percent of the federal credit for tax years 2024 and 2025 and drops to 25 percent for tax year 2026. The refundable Colorado Child Tax Credit covers children under 6, depending on income. The Family Affordability Tax Credit will not be available for tax year 2026.
