Flexible work schedules for single mothers

Seven ways a job can fit around children, each with a sample week, the roles that offer it and the pay rules that matter.

Choosing a schedule

The right schedule depends on your children’s ages, the care you can arrange and the work you do. Younger children often mean school hours or part-time days. Older children open up evenings, hybrid weeks and longer days.

The seven schedules side by side
Schedule Typical hours Works well when
School hours About 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays Your children are in school all day
Part-time 15 to 30 hours on set days You have help on certain days
Remote Set hours at home, sometimes a split day You have a quiet space and reliable internet
Hybrid Two or three fixed office days You can book care for the office days
Evenings and weekends Evening shifts and weekend days Another adult is home at those times
Four-day week Four longer days, one weekday free You can cover long days to win a free one
Flexible start Start between about 7 and 10 a.m. Drop-off times change through the week

Questions about schedules

Which schedule is easiest to find?

It depends on your work and where you live. Part-time and remote roles are common in office work, while pharmacy and front desk work often runs in shifts. Tell us what you do and we will tell you honestly what is realistic.

Can I combine two schedules?

Often. A hybrid role with a flexible start, or a part-time role inside school hours, are common combinations. Tell us the exact hours you need.

Do I have to explain why I need flexible hours?

No. You only need to tell us the hours you can work.

Tell us the hours you can keep

Send us your hours, your ZIP code and the work you have done. We look for roles on schedules that fit.
