Flexible jobs for single mothers in Indiana
Indiana follows the federal minimum wage, so its child care vouchers, On My Way Pre-K and the state earned income credit matter most when you plan your hours.
Pay in Indiana
Indiana’s minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, the same as the federal rate, and has been since July 24, 2009. It applies to employers with two or more employees, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. State law stops local governments from setting a higher rate.
Leave for parents
Indiana has no state paid family leave program, so eligible employees rely on the federal Family and Medical Leave Act for up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave. Indiana employers are not required to pay for sick days, personal days or holidays, and state law stops cities and counties from requiring their own leave or scheduling policies. Ask about paid time off before you accept a job.
Help with child care
Indiana’s child care vouchers come through the Child Care and Development Fund, run by the Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning. To qualify when you apply, household income must be at or below 135 percent of the federal poverty level. You apply online through Early Ed Connect. New applicants are currently placed on a waiting list, with priority for families below the poverty level and for the children of child care workers.

For 2026 to 2027 the child must be 4 by August 1, 2026, household income must be at or below 135 percent of the poverty level, and a parent must be working, in school or in job training.
