Flexible-start jobs for single mothers
Choose a start time that suits the school run, within core hours you agree with the employer.
What a flexible start looks like
A flexible start lets you choose when your working day begins, usually inside a window such as 7 to 10 a.m., as long as you work the agreed core hours and the agreed total for the week.
For a parent, the value is in the mornings. On days when you do drop-off, you start later and finish later. On days when someone else takes the children, you start early and are free for pickup.

Early starts work on days when the other parent or a before-school club does drop-off. Late finishes work on days with after-school care.
How an employer can set it up
Set the core hours
Choose the hours when everyone must be working, such as 10 to 3, and hold meetings inside them.
Set the start window
Decide the earliest and latest start, and the weekly total, and write them into the offer.
Agree how time is recorded
A simple time record for each day keeps pay accurate when start and finish times vary.
Cover the edges
Stagger start times across the team so phones and inboxes are covered from opening to closing.
Pay and the law
Hours worked
Every hour worked is paid, whenever it starts. Short breaks of about 20 minutes or less are normally paid; a meal break of 30 minutes or more can be unpaid when you are fully relieved of work.
Overtime
Overtime is due at one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Varying start times do not change that.
Daily overtime
In California and a few other states, long single days can trigger daily overtime even within a 40-hour week. Check your state guide.
Questions about flexible start jobs
What are core hours?
The part of the day when everyone on the team must be working, such as 10 to 3. Outside them, you choose when to start and finish.
Can my start time change every day?
It depends on the employer. Some allow it day to day, others ask you to set a pattern for each week. Agree the rules in writing.
Does a flexible start change my pay?
No. You are paid for the hours you work, whenever they start, and overtime is still due after 40 hours in a workweek.
