Medical receptionist jobs for single mothers

Run the front desk of a medical practice: greeting patients, booking appointments and checking insurance details.

What the job is

Medical receptionists are the first people patients see. They check patients in and out, book and change appointments, collect and verify insurance details, take payments, answer phones and pass messages to clinical staff. A good front desk keeps the whole practice running on time.

The median hourly wage was $19.01, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ industry figures for receptionists and information clerks in offices of physicians. Across all industries, BLS reports a median of $18.27 an hour for receptionists: see the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Training

BLS says receptionists typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with training on the job. Practices usually train new staff on their scheduling and billing software and on patient privacy rules. One optional credential is the National Healthcareer Association’s Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, which asks for a training program or a year of supervised work experience.
