Flexible jobs for single mothers in Arizona

Arizona’s minimum wage and earned sick time help working parents, but child care assistance has a long waiting list, so plan early.

Pay in Arizona

Arizona’s minimum wage rose to $15.15 an hour on January 1, 2026, according to the Industrial Commission of Arizona. Two cities set more: Flagstaff at $18.35 in 2026 and $18.95 from January 1, 2027, and Tucson at $15.45 for 2026.

Leave for parents

Earned paid sick time

Under the Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act, approved by voters as Proposition 206, you earn 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Employers with 15 or more employees must allow up to 40 hours a year, and smaller employers up to 24 hours. You can use it to care for your child.

Family leave

Arizona has no state paid family leave program, so eligible employees rely on the federal Family and Medical Leave Act for up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave.

Help with child care

The Department of Economic Security runs Child Care Assistance for children under 13, for families with income at or below 165 percent of the federal poverty level. You apply online through the A-to-Z Arizona portal. Most families join a waiting list first: on October 2, 2026 it held 9,128 families and 15,093 children.

For younger children, Quality First Scholarships help low-income families pay for early care and education from birth to age 5, through participating providers.

Tax credits

Arizona has no state earned income credit, so the federal Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit are the ones to claim. Our support page explains both.

Scheduling

Arizona law stops cities, towns and counties from requiring employers to change how they schedule employees. Notice of shifts is up to each employer, so ask how far ahead the rota is posted.

Getting into work

ARIZONA@WORK offers free job search help, starting from the Department of Economic Security’s job seeker page. Insurance professionals are licensed by the Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions. Pharmacy technicians and trainees apply to the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.
