Paid Family and Medical Leave
The state’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program, run by the Department of Family and Medical Leave, has paid benefits since January 1, 2021. The maximum weekly benefit is $1,230.39 in 2026 and $1,284.61 in 2027.
Earned sick time
Under the Earned Sick Time Law, you earn at least 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours a year. Employers with 11 or more employees must pay for it, and smaller employers must give it unpaid. You can use it to care for your child.
Help with child care
Child Care Financial Assistance, from the Department of Early Education and Care, is open to families earning up to 85 percent of the state median income, with priority for those at or below 50 percent. You apply online with MyChildCareMA, and if funding is short you join the statewide waiting list.
In communities with high need, the Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative helps school districts offer preschool for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds, including full-day, full-year places.
Tax credits
The Massachusetts EITC is 40 percent of the federal credit and refundable. For tax year 2025 it paid up to $1,731 with one child, $2,861 with two and $3,218 with three or more. The refundable Child and Family Tax Credit adds $440 for each eligible child under 13, dependent aged 65 or over, or disabled dependent or spouse.
