What the job is
Payroll specialists turn timesheets, salaries and changes into accurate pay. They process each payroll, take out taxes, benefits and other deductions, file payroll tax returns, keep records and answer staff questions about their pay. The work runs on a fixed calendar of pay dates, which makes the busy days predictable.

Training and certification
BLS says most financial clerks need a high school diploma or equivalent. Payroll skills are mostly learned on the job and on the employer’s payroll system.
Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)
From PayrollOrg, for payroll beginners and people in service and support roles with payroll knowledge. The exam has 150 questions with 3 hours to answer them, and you do not need to be a member.
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)
Also from PayrollOrg, for people with payroll knowledge and experience. One route in is three years of payroll practice out of the five years before you apply.

What is the difference between payroll and timekeeping?
Timekeeping collects the hours people worked. Payroll turns those hours into pay, takes out taxes and deductions, and files the returns. Many jobs cover both.
Which certification should I start with?
PayrollOrg’s Fundamental Payroll Certification is aimed at people new to payroll. Its Certified Payroll Professional credential is for people with payroll knowledge and experience.
Do payroll jobs have deadlines I cannot move?
