Hybrid jobs for single mothers
Some days in the office and the rest at home, with the office days fixed so child care can be planned around them.
What hybrid work looks like day to day
Hybrid roles split the week between an office and home. The pattern that works best for parents is a fixed one: the same office days every week, so before-school and after-school care can be booked once for the whole term.
On home days you get the school run back. On office days, the commute and the longer day are the cost, so the office days need to be ones where care is available.
| Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun | |

Fixed office days let you book before-school and after-school care for the same three days every week.
How an employer can set it up
Fix the office days
Choose the days the team is in, and keep them the same each week. Changing office days at short notice is the fastest way to lose a parent.
Put the meetings on office days
Group the meetings and hands-on work into office days, and keep home days for focused work.
Agree the home setup
Settle equipment, internet and how time is recorded on home days before the first week.
Allow a swap for sickness
A clear rule for swapping an office day to a home day when a child is unwell keeps the arrangement working through winter.
Pay and the law
Commuting
Ordinary travel from home to your usual workplace and back is not work time under federal wage law, so it is unpaid on office days.
Hours on home days
Hours worked at home count the same as hours in the office. Short breaks of about 20 minutes or less are normally paid, and the employer must pay for work it knows about.
Overtime
Overtime is due at one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, counting office and home hours together.
Sick days
Many states require paid sick leave that covers a child’s illness. Your state guide has the details.
Questions about hybrid jobs
Can I choose my office days?
Often, at the start. What matters most is that the days then stay the same, so you can book child care for them.
Is my commute paid on office days?
No. Ordinary travel from home to your usual workplace is not work time under federal wage law.
What if my child is sick on an office day?
Ask whether you can swap to a home day. Many states also have paid sick leave you can use to care for a child, and your state guide explains the rules.
