School-hours jobs for single mothers
Jobs that start after drop-off and end before pickup, so your working day sits inside the school day.
What school hours look like day to day
A school-hours job starts after you drop the children off and ends in time for pickup. In practice that is a five or six hour day, Monday to Friday, with the exact times set by your school’s bell schedule and your commute.
The hard part is rarely the school week itself. It is the days the school is closed: summer, spring break, teacher workdays and snow days. Plan for those with the employer before you accept, so nobody is caught out in June.

Your school’s bell times set the real edges of the day. Add your travel time at each end before you agree the hours.
How an employer can set it up
Fix the core hours
Agree set start and finish times inside the school day, such as 9:15 to 2:45, and keep them steady from week to week. A predictable shift is what makes the role work.
Plan the school breaks
Decide in advance what happens in summer and over school holidays: unpaid time off, extra hours in other weeks, remote days or temporary cover.
Pair two shifts
A morning role and an afternoon role can cover a full working day between them, keeping a front desk staffed from opening to closing without asking either person for the whole day.
Hold meetings inside the window
Team meetings and training held between 9:30 and 2 mean nobody on a school-hours schedule misses them.
Pay and the law
Overtime
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime is due at one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. A school-hours week of around 27 hours does not reach that line. California and a few other states also count daily overtime, so check your state guide.
Breaks
Short breaks of about 20 minutes or less are normally paid as working time. A meal break of 30 minutes or more can be unpaid when you are fully relieved of work, which matters when you are counting the hours in a short day.
Benefits
Federal wage law does not define full-time or part-time work. For health coverage, employers with 50 or more full-time employees, counting equivalents, must treat anyone averaging 30 or more hours a week as full-time. Many school-hours schedules fall just under that, so ask how the employer handles benefits.
Sick days
Many states require paid sick leave that can be used when a child is ill. Your state guide says whether yours does.
Questions about school hours jobs
Are school-hours jobs only for the school year?
Some are, like classroom support roles that follow the school calendar. Most office roles run all year, so agree before you start how summer, spring break and teacher workdays will be covered.
Will a school-hours job pay overtime?
Rarely. Federal law requires overtime only for hours over 40 in a workweek, and a school-hours week sits well below that. A few states also have daily overtime rules.
Can I ask for school hours if a job is advertised as full-time?
Yes. Some roles can be shortened or split between two people, and that is part of what we discuss with employers before a search starts.
Tell us your school’s bell times
Send us the hours between drop-off and pickup that you can work, and your ZIP code. We look for roles that fit inside them.
