Leave for parents
Earned sick time
The Earned Sick Time Act took effect on February 21, 2025. You earn 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, and you can use it to care for your child. Employers can cap use at 72 hours a year, or 40 hours at businesses with 10 or fewer employees.
Family leave
Michigan has no state paid family leave program, so eligible employees rely on the federal Family and Medical Leave Act for up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave.
Help with child care
The Child Development and Care program helps pay for child care. It is run by the Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP), with eligibility handled by the Department of Health and Human Services. Apply online through MI Bridges or on paper at your local MDHHS office.
Through PreK for All, every child who is 4 by December 1 qualifies for free PreK, whatever the household income. Programs run four or five days a week, and you enroll through your local intermediate school district.
Tax credits
The Michigan earned income credit is 30 percent of the federal credit and can lead to a refund even if you owe no tax. For tax year 2025 the maximum was $2,414.
Scheduling
Michigan law stops local governments from regulating the hours and scheduling that employers provide. Notice of shifts is up to each employer.
Getting into work
Michigan Works! service centers help job seekers across the state. Insurance producers are licensed by the Department of Insurance and Financial Services, and pharmacy technicians by the Board of Pharmacy.
