Virtual assistant jobs for single mothers
Run inboxes, calendars, documents and bookings for a busy employer, all from your own home.
What the job is
A virtual assistant does the work of an administrative assistant from home: managing email and calendars, arranging travel and meetings, preparing documents and spreadsheets, keeping records and handling routine requests. Many work for one busy manager. Others support a small team.
Good virtual assistants are organized and quick to reply, and they keep the employer’s information private.
Pay
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count virtual assistants as a separate occupation. Its handbook notes that some administrative assistants work out of their own homes as virtual assistants, so the closest figures are for secretaries and administrative assistants, except legal, medical and executive.
| Measure | Yearly pay |
|---|---|
| Lowest 10 percent earned less than | $33,280 |
| Median | $47,540 |
| Highest 10 percent earned more than | $66,350 |
The median hourly wage was $22.86. These figures cover employees only: BLS wage data leave out the self-employed. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Getting started
BLS says administrative assistants typically need a high school diploma or equivalent. Office experience, strong writing and confidence with common office software count for more than any certificate.
How we screen for virtual assistant roles
Tools
We ask which email, calendar, document and spreadsheet tools you use day to day.
Writing
We look at how you write, because most of the job happens in email and chat.
Reliability
We ask about response times you have kept before and, with your permission, speak to a reference.
Home setup
We check you have a quiet workspace, a reliable computer and the internet connection the employer requires.
Questions about virtual assistant jobs
Is virtual assistant work a real job or a side gig?
Both exist. Some virtual assistants are employees of one company, and others work for themselves with several clients. The roles we recruit for are with employers.
What tools do I need to know?
Email, calendar, document and spreadsheet tools, plus video calls. Employers often name the specific software in the job details.
How do I avoid fake virtual assistant jobs?
Never pay to start, never buy equipment for a promised refund and never pass money on for an employer. Our find work page lists the warning signs.
