Leave for parents
Family and Medical Leave Insurance
Maryland’s FAMLI program will provide up to 12 weeks of job-protected paid leave a year, at up to $1,000 a week. Contributions start on January 1, 2027, split equally between employers and employees, and benefits start on January 1, 2028.
Sick and safe leave
Under the Healthy Working Families Act, you earn 1 hour of leave for every 30 hours worked. Employers with 15 or more employees must pay for it, and smaller employers must give it unpaid. Employers may cap earning at 40 hours and use at 64 hours a year, and you can use it to care for your child.
Help with child care
The Child Care Scholarship Program, run by the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Early Childhood, helps working families pay for child care. It currently runs with a waiting list because demand is higher than funding. Start from ChildCare.gov’s Maryland page.
Under the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds from families at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty level can attend full-day pre-K at no cost. State law defines full day as a six and a half hour school day.
Tax credits
The Maryland earned income credit can be worth up to $4,000, and part of it is refundable. The state’s Child Tax Credit pays $500 for each child under 6, or under 17 with a disability, for families with federal adjusted gross income under $15,000, and it shrinks above that.
Getting into work
Maryland’s American Job Centers serve job seekers across the state. Insurance producers are licensed by the Maryland Insurance Administration. Pharmacy technicians register with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy.
