Four-day week jobs for single mothers

Longer days from Monday to Thursday, then a full weekday free for appointments, school events and the rest of family life.

What a four-day week looks like

There are two kinds of four-day week. A compressed week fits a full 40 hours into four longer days, usually 10 hours each. A reduced week works four ordinary days, often 32 hours, with pay that usually reflects the shorter week.

For a single parent, the long days are the hard part: a 10-hour shift plus travel often means care before and after school. What you get back is a full weekday for appointments, school events and errands that otherwise eat into evenings.

Here each working day runs from 7 to 5:30 with a half-hour lunch. Days that long usually need before-school and after-school care, or another adult, on the four working days.

How an employer can set it up

Choose compressed or reduced

Decide whether the role keeps 40 hours in four days or moves to fewer hours. Say which in the job details.

Fix the free day

Set the day off and keep it. A free day that moves from week to week cannot be planned around.

Cover the fifth day

Stagger free days across the team, or pair the role with a colleague, so the work is covered all week.

Check state overtime rules first

Where a state counts daily overtime, a 10-hour day can trigger it unless the schedule is set up the way state law requires.

Pay and the law

Federal overtime

The Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime only for hours over 40 in a workweek, and sets no daily limit for employees aged 16 and over. Four 10-hour days add up to 40 hours, so no federal overtime is due.

Daily overtime in some states

California counts overtime after 8 hours in a workday, and double time after 12, unless an alternative workweek of days up to 10 hours has been approved in a secret ballot by at least two-thirds of the affected employees. Colorado counts overtime after 12 hours in a workday. Alaska counts it after 8 hours in a day, with exceptions such as employers of three or fewer people.

Paid time off

On a compressed week, a day of paid leave is a 10-hour day. Agree how holidays and sick days are counted in hours before you start.

Questions about four-day week jobs

Is a four-day week always 40 hours?

No. A compressed week fits a full 40 hours into four longer days. A reduced week cuts the hours, for example to 32, usually with pay to match.

Do 10-hour days mean overtime?

Not under federal law, which counts overtime only after 40 hours in a workweek. California and a few other states have daily overtime rules, so employers there need to set the schedule up carefully.

Which day off is usual?

Friday or Monday is most common, but a midweek day can suit a family better. Agree it in writing so it stays fixed.
