Nebraska SNAP is a program that helps low-income individuals buy food. Although it’s not necessary that Nebraskans receive any other public assistance in order to qualify for SNAP, they have to apply and find out if they are eligible.
While anyone can apply for benefits, the program is intended to assist those most in need of food assistance. Priority focuses on low-income families, single mothers, and elderly SSI recipients. What Is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, offers food benefits, access, and education in food preparation and nutrition for low-income households. The benefits, which are a type of ATM card and electronic card, can be used to purchase eligible food at authorized retail food shops.
SNAP is the largest domestic hunger safety net program. Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), a state agency that works with nutrition educators and neighborhood and faith-based groups, ensure that all those who are eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed choices about how to apply and have access to benefits.
Eligibility Requirements For Nebraska SNAP
To be eligible for the SNAP assistance program in Nebraska, you must meet these eligibility requirements:
- Nebraska Legal Resident
- You can be a US Citizen or a lawful permanent resident.
- Show proof of identity
- Respect certain income guidelines
- You have less than $5,000 of resources
All SNAP recipients in Nebraska must comply with the general SNAP and ABAWD work rules to be eligible.
Income Limit For Food Stamps In Nebraska
Nebraska’s most eligible families have a gross income of at least 130% of the federal poverty line, which is approximately $2,380 per month for a family with three members.

You can apply online for SNAP at ACCESSNebraska. You can also request a paper application at your local DHHS to submit in person if you don’t have internet access. For assistance with filling out the application, call the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (1-800-254-4202).
When Can I Apply For SNAP In Nebraska?
Families and individuals can apply for SNAP until September 30, 2023. The law included a sunset provision to prevent the use of Nebraska general fund dollars to pay administrative costs related to the change.
SNAP benefits are from federal funds. However, states need to share all administrative costs related to the program. The increase is effective, but the federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars cover all administrative costs for this purpose.
Can You Use Nebraska EBT In Other States?
You use your SNAP benefits through your EBT Card. This means you can use your Nebraska EBT anywhere in the United States that accepts EBT cards, including Guam, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
