Low-income single mothers dream of providing a comfortable, consistent lifestyle for their children. It can be difficult because they often must pay utility bills or other necessities. Some organizations have programs that help these families in Delaware with bills and provide for their families because of the strain they are experiencing financially.

We will be discussing the services provided by different Delaware organizations to single mothers in order to overcome their financial limitations.

Delmarva Power 

Delmarva Power

Offers programs and services to single mothers in crisis. They provide energy assistance and help customers with special needs. They educate their customers about ways to reduce their electric bills. The budget billing program helps single mothers to forecast their monthly energy costs and allows them to plan for them. 

To provide energy assistance for their customers, the power company has partnered with the Salvation Army. The Good Neighbor Energy Fund is another program that they offer to customers who are facing financial difficulties. This Energy Directory has a compilation of energy service providers in Delaware that have similar assistance programs. 

Healthcare And Medical Bills Help

This non-profit specializes in the following services: women’s health and cardiac and vascular, orthopaedic services, oncology, surgery services, and orthopaedic services. They offer a variety of diagnostic, emergency, and inpatient services. Patients who are uninsured or underinsured can receive a discount on their billed charges if the claim is made within one month. Patients from families that have incomes below the Federal Poverty Level are eligible for the hospital’s charity programs. The Financial Assistance Program is valid for one year as long as the client remains eligible.

Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc.

A non-profit corporation that relies on donations from foundations and individuals. Donations can be in the form of either financial aid or goods and services. They also provide tokens and bus passes. They offer shelter for families experiencing homelessness and transitional housing programs.

The Community Transit of Delaware County, Inc. 

All members of the community are eligible to take part in trips. Before booking a trip, passengers must register. It is a non-profit transportation company that provides services to the public.

Food And Meals Help

Cape Henlopen Food Basket (CHFB) 

Provides assistance to those in need. If a person needs food assistance more often than three times within a 3-month period, they will be referred to Delaware State Social Services. Then, the CHFB will send them back to the CHFB. All beneficiaries receive the same food.

Families in need receive a food basket that provides them with a 10-day supply of frozen and canned food as well as supermarket vouchers which allow them to purchase perishables like eggs, fresh milk, and butter. The USDA grants nonprofits and community organizations to provide food.

Household Items And Clothes Help

Atlantic Community Thrift Shop (ACTS) 

A non-profit organization that helps youth and those needing clothing, financial assistance, household items, and other necessities. People in need can get gently used and clean household accessories, linens, clothing, shoes, and other kitchen and dining items. Volunteers manage the organization.

In Her Shoes, Inc. 

A non-profit organization that is exclusively for women. Through this service, they nurture, facilitate and restore confidence for women facing financial difficulties, trauma or imprisonment. They work to encourage women to achieve financial independence.
