Single moms who have lost their jobs during this difficult year may be struggling to pay for their family’s expenses. Single moms are expected to look after their children while working, but this is not always possible, especially in a time where schools or daycare facilities are being closed due to COVID-19. This leaves single moms without options of daycare for their children while they are at work, which may result in losing their jobs.

Thankfully, there are a few unemployment benefits that can help single moms in a situation like this. Here is everything you need to know about the unemployment benefit by state. 

What is unemployment insurance? 

Unemployment benefits which are also known as unemployment insurance, are provided by the state to individuals who have lost their jobs. 

Unemployment benefits are a means to help individuals by temporarily paying a portion of their wages to cover their expenses. 

The criteria to qualify for unemployment benefits: 

Each state has its own specific criteria that you have to meet to qualify for unemployment benefits, but the general criteria are inclusive of:

  1. You have lost your job, and it was not your fault. 
  2. You are currently able and available to work and are currently looking for a job. 
  3. Due to these COVID-19 reasons, you are currently partially unemployed or unemployed. 
  4. You have earned a certain amount of income during your period of employment. 

The maximum weekly unemployment benefits of the 50 States:

  1. Alabama

Maximum weeks of benefits: 14 weeks

Minimum weekly amount: $45

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: The maximum weekly unemployment benefit in Alabama is $275. 

  1. Alaska 

Maximum weeks of benefits: 26 + 3 weeks

Minimum weekly amount: $56

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: Throughout the week of June 12th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefits in Alaska is $370. 

  1. Arizona 

Maximum weeks of benefits: 26 weeks 

Minimum weekly amount: $187

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: Throughout the week of July 10th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit in Arizona was $570, and after July 10th, 2021, the maximum weekly benefit was $240. 

One-time bonus: In Arizona, when you return to work with a full-time job, you can receive a one-time bonus valued at $2,000 and if you return to work with a part-time job, you can receive a one-time bonus valued at $1,000.

  1. Arkansas

Maximum weeks of benefits: 16 weeks

Minimum weekly amount: $81

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: Throughout the week of June 26th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is $751, and after June 26th, 2021, the maximum unemployment benefit is $451. 

  1. California 

Maximum weeks of benefits: 26 weeks plus an additional 13 weeks 

Minimum weekly amount: $40 

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: Throughout the week of September 6th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is $750. After September 6th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit will be $450.

  1. Colorado 

Maximum weeks of benefits: 26 weeks 

Minimum weekly amount: $25

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: Throughout the week of September 6th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is $861. After September 6th, 2021 the maximum weekly unemployment benefit will be $561.

  1. Connecticut 

Maximum weeks of benefits: 26 weeks 

Minimum weekly amount: $15

Maximum weekly unemployment benefits: Throughout the week of September 6th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is $949. After September 6th, 2021, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit will be $649.

One-time bonus: 10,000 people are offered a one-time bonus of $1,000 who manage to secure a full-time job for a minimum of 8 weeks through the ‘Back to Work CT’ Program.

Maximum weeks of benefits: 35 weeks

One-time bonus: Through the Summer Stipend Program In New Hampshire a one-time bonus of $1,000 is given to individuals who make $25 or less for a full-time job which they have worked at for at least 8 weeks. $500 is given to individuals who have a part-time job for at least 8 weeks and earn less than $25.
